2001 Kathleen Ferrier Award
“Confidence and command radiated from Stephanie Marshall the moment she stepped through the door, stunningly attired in full-length, off the shoulder cerise. The Ferrier winner – already set for the title role in Poul Ruder’s The Handmaid’s Tale at ENO – plumped for breadth of repertoire. She knows how to pitch her voice’s clarion call, coloured up and down with low-level vibrato. In the quicksilver repertoire, Marshall felt her way through with no problem: the mingled fear and delight of Grieg’s With a waterlily got the house shivering. Her Vaughn Williams beguiled, and her American selections (Bolcom’s Amor especially) swept us away in smiles. “
