Mezzo-soprano

 
 

Stephanie Marshall’s performance in the demanding title role of Poul Ruder’s The Handmaid’s Tale marked her out as one of the most interesting young mezzo-sopranos to emerge in recent years.  She appeared in the British premiere of the opera, based on Margaret Atwood’s award winning novel, with the English National Opera.  She then returned to her native Canada for her debut with the Canadian Opera Company when Phyllida Lloyd’s production was staged there in 2004.


Stephanie studied at McGill University, Montreal, and at the Royal Academy of Music, London, later becoming an Associate of the RAM.  She was prize winner on several occasions at the RAM and was the recipient of The Queen’s Commendation for Excellence in her final year.  She was also the winner of the 2001 Kathleen Ferrier Award.


Stephanie Marshall was a Company Principal with the English National Opera and her roles there include Annio La clemenza di Tito, Cherubino The Marriage of Figaro, Tessa The Gondoliers, Wellgunde The Rhinegold and Twilight of the Gods, Proserpina  Orfeo, Sonya War and Peace, Kate Pinkerton Mme Butterfly,  Mercedes Carmen,  Offred The Handmaid’s Tale, and Myrtale Thais.  She covered Xerxes Xerxes , Octavian The Rosenkavalier,  Sesto La clemenza di Tito,  Ariodante Ariodante and The Messenger Orfeo. Opera appearances elsewhere include L’Enfant L’Enfant et les sortilèges, Meg Page Falstaff,  Nancy Albert Herring and Dryade  Ariadne auf Naxos.


In concert she has sung with the Halle Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Britten Sinfonia and the Birmingham Contemporary Music  Group for the BBC.  She sang the role of Sidonie von Grasenabb in the world  premiere  performance of Gerald Berry’s The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant,  also recorded for CD with the RTE National Symphony Orchestra.  Stephanie has  appeared with the Orchestre de Bretagne under Paul McCreesh and the Northern Sinfonia in the Mozart Requiem.


As a recitalist Stephanie Marshall has performed with Christopher Glynn, Julius Drake, Anna Tillbrooke and Michael McMahon. She has recorded recitals for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and made her Wigmore Hall debut in 2002.


Stephanie lives in London with her husband and two young daughters.

Biography
